How Old Was Franco Harris When He Retired? Franco Harris, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and NFL Hall of Famer, passed away Wednesday at 72. The news of his death comes just three days before the retirement of his number 32 jersey by his former team.
How Old Was Franco Harris When He Retired?
Harris arrived in the NFL in 1972 to play with the Steelers, a team with which he remained until 1983; his last year in the league was spent with the Seattle Seahawks, a team with which he retired as the third-best running back in the NFL behind Walter Payton and Jim Brown.
Throughout his career, he rushed for 12,120 yards. He earned the NFL Rookie of the Year award in 1972 by rushing for 1,055 yards, a team record for a rookie, and 10 touchdowns.
Harris was the 13th overall pick in the 1972 NFL draft for the Pennsylvania State team. Over the next decade, he helped the Steelers win the Super Bowl four separate times and was named MVP of the ’74 Finals.
Harris remained the Steelers’ all-time leader in rushing yards with 11,950 and was one step away from becoming the third player in the franchise to have his jersey number retired.
The Steelers intended that honour to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception, the game-winning play Harris participated in for his first playoff win.
