Extrapolations Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: The scripts for Extrapolation’s episodes are getting too preachy, and the show’s stars are getting too much attention (the fake “Singing in the Rain” bit makes it seem like Daveed Diggs has to sing in everything he does). Even though there is a lot of flooding in the episode, “2047” is a bit dry.
Extrapolations Season 1 Episode 3 Recap
It’s been another year. Now, in 2047, the episode is written by Marshall Zucker. He gives advice to a young girl who is having a very serious existential crisis. Allana, played by Neska Rose, is a young girl who goes to synagogue with her family. Her father, David Schwimmer, is no longer married, and his new wife is becoming a Christian. Her grandfather, played by Judd Hirsch, makes fun of her whenever he can. Allana is surrounded by religious extremists and is now up to her knees in water because Miami is flooding and having its 41st storm in a young year. This year, there are 23 million refugees in the country, and just over 800,000 people live in Miami. You can no longer get fresh food in Florida, where they make soft shells from cauliflower.
How does Allana’s father save the synagogue?
The local government is getting together with social service and religious groups to talk about what buildings can be saved. When Marshall shows up, the local rep is surprised that they didn’t bring gifts, food, or famous people. Marshall tells the board and his mother that’s not a good sign for him. Marshall’s grandfather pulls him aside after he gets the rejection letter and then gives a passive-aggressive sermon at Passover. He tells him that he should talk to his son, who works in these kinds of grey areas, about the appeal. That means putting oil in the gears. And since Allana’s dad is filthy rich, it will be a good use of money.
Allana asks almost anyone an existential question. Even Alpha (which is the new Alexa). Like, will Miami be the first city to fall? (I think the other city is Tallahassee, and Marshall says it’s just like Sodom and Gomorrah.) Marshall is also having a crisis of faith because he let public officials be bought, which works, and now he feels bad about it because they closed a local shelter he has always helped support. The more Allana asks how God could let this happen or who decides who should be saved, the more Marshall tries to explain away specific sins he just did.
Who turned in Allana’s father for bribery?
Allana’s father was arrested for bribing a public official, but we later found out that it was Allana who gave him up. Marshall and Allana’s father don’t know that she has recorded and written down her father’s talk about bribery. She tells everyone at the synagogue, where her father is sitting in one of the pews.
What does Marshall save at the synagogue?
Marshall comes and must save their holy Torah scrolls, which are in an ark above the water. Scott Z. Burns, who made the show, didn’t miss the irony of a “ark” protecting scrolls during a flood. As they go up the stairs to the roof, Marshall tells them a story about the man by the river who turned down God’s help. The great Karl Malden in the episode “Take This Sabbath Day” of The West Wing tells a better version of this story.
How Season 1 Episode 3 of Extrapolations Ends,
Does Marshall survive the flood?
Marshall lives through the flood because a police helicopter takes him to safety. Allana runs into him at a shelter where she works in Tallahassee. She tells him that her father is still alive and that he was just moved to a prison in the north the day before.
Allana tells him that he never answered her question about why God doesn’t do something about all the suffering. I would have liked it if Marshall had told her, “Because you ask too many questions,” but he didn’t. He tells her that Moses asked God the same thing, and God answered in a way that Moses wouldn’t understand because he is God.
