This review and summary of the fourth episode of Divorce Attorney: Shin contains spoilers

Shin Sung-han wakes up sad because she had a dream about her dead sister. This is how the episode starts. When he gets to his office earlier than usual, Lee Seo-jin is already there, standing by the main door. He shows her in, and she says she’s sorry she showed up with her resume so quickly. She also says it was a mistake and that she will take back her resume.

Before she could change everything, a lot of people came to the office for a consultation, probably because they saw Seo-jin come in and also because Sung-han became more well-known after she won her case. He tells her and her assistant lawyer Jang Hyeong-geun to take care of it while he goes to see Park Ae-ran.

At the same time, Park Yu-intern seok’s shows up at the office building and hears Sung-han and Ae-ran talking. He tells the Keumhwa law firm about the case when he goes back there. An intern, Choi Jun is in charge of Sung-case han’s because everyone thinks it’s just a small case. Ae-ran tells her lawyer that she couldn’t find the ownership transfer document and that her husband caught her because he knew it wasn’t there.

Her mother-in-law also wants to sue, while Ae-ran is getting worse with her depression and has been getting help for it for the past three years. This makes Sung-han think about something, and he says that before MIL does anything, he and his wife will sue her for defamation, saying that Ae-ran never hit her and that MIL spread the rumours.

Yu-seok also goes to see her husband, Seo Byeong Chul, and convinces him to take Choi Jun on as his lawyer for free. We also find out that Ae-ran got pregnant before they got married and that the MIL wanted to marry her son off to the daughter of a Vice Principal. She hated Ae-ran from the start and made fun of everything about her, from the type of diaper she wore to the fact that she went on a simple work trip with her husband.

On the weekend, the three friends were seen going camping. Hyeon-geun said that he doesn’t know when Sung-han might quit suddenly, so they don’t hire more people or do more work. Sung-han also says that she had a dream about Ju-hwa and that her ex-husband didn’t even let her son come to the funeral.

Today, her son Gi-yeong lives a lonely life with his stepmother, who doesn’t want him to have any contact with her ex-family wife’s or anything else that reminds her of her. She got custody of Gi-yeong by getting Yu-seok to do what she wanted. His dad agrees to stop letting Sung-han come see him every month, but he asks to see him one last time to say goodbye.

After saying goodbye to Ji-eun, Hyeong-geun gets a text from her saying that she couldn’t tell him that day because she was pregnant and wanted a divorce right away. He gets the text while talking to Sung-han but leaves crying and goes to the noodles shop to eat extra spicy ramen with wine.

The other two friends go to his house to look for him. When they find out what happened, they try to stay the night. But Hyeong-geun sends them back, but not before they grab all the sharp things in case he tries to hurt himself. When the defamation case finally gets to mediation, the husband’s lawyer says that his mother got the building as a gift.

Sung-han tells her that the husband hasn’t worked in 8 years and that Ae-ran is the only one who brings in money, so she should get a share of it. He asks the husband if he thinks it’s just his building, even though his wife has been feeding the family. Before he could say anything else, Ae-ran admitted that she had hit her MIL and lied about it.

When Byeong-chul sees that she is in such a bad way, he pulls out the recording and the ownership document that has been signed and notarized. Because of this, it was clear that the husband was the only one who owned it, so Ae-ran also got her share of it. Back at home, the MIL is very angry at her son and brings up the fact that the Vice Principal’s daughter would never have done that.

At this point, the son says that the daughter turned down his marriage proposal when she found out he was going to marry his mother. She wanted to live with him by herself. He started drinking because he was upset about being turned down, and Ae-ran was the only one who could help him through that time. Slowly, they fell in love and had a baby, leading to their marriage.

Even so, the MIL still wanted her son to marry the other girl and says he should have started his own life instead of caring for the mother. But their story ends on a very touching note when Ae-ran apologises for touching the mother and the MIL thanks her for taking care of her all these years.

On the other hand, the lawyer for the defendant, Choi Jun, quits the Keumhwa Law firm and goes straight to Shin Sung-han to ask for a job. At first, he doesn’t want to hire anyone from that company. But then Jun comes up with a deal: if he gets a job, Jun will delete the video of him playing the piano that he posted online. Even though Sung-han looks angry at Jun at the end of this episode, we can expect him to be at work in the next episode.

To sum up, Episode 4 of Divorce Attorney Shin

There were some new starts and some endings in this episode. But the way Ae-story ran’s ends doesn’t make sense to me. After not liking her the day before, a MIL can’t have such a quick change of heart. The ending would have been better if the husband had stood up for his wife instead of making it seem like she was the only one who gave in to live with his mother.

Even though Sung-han compared their marriage problem to that of the classical musician Robert Schumann and his wife Clara, who also had trouble with Clara’s father. But at least Clara was strong enough to follow the man she loved and not marry the guy her father wanted her to marry.

He talks about the piece Three Romances, particularly the one he calls “simple and heartfelt.” If you listen, it sounds like something that would play when two people who clearly love each other decide to end their relationship. Even though it’s a beautiful piece of music, I don’t think it fits the case very well.
