Now considered by scholars to be one of the greatest fiascos in twentieth century military history, the Dardanelles expedition was a painful experience for thousands of soldiers from the Antipodes with their heads full of dreams. A deadly return to reality. Idealists, patriots or idle people in need of adventure, these young people discovered on these cliffs of Asia Minor a sinister warrior universe, far removed from the romantic idea that most of them had of war. Badly organized by a staff that had largely underestimated the defensive capabilities of a despised enemy, this Dardanelles expedition – also known as the Gallipoli campaign – had the avowed objective of opening a supply route to the Russian ally. In the end, what was to be a quick “clean-up” operation turned into a long ten-month trench battle in which 500,000 British and French attempted unsuccessfully to take control of the Turkish-controlled peninsula.

Attack The Block (2011)

British science fiction comedy horror film “Attack the Block” released on 11 May 2011.

When it comes to trying, narrating, representing marginality, the underworld of society and its less pleasant facets in the eyes of the “average viewer”, British cinema is unique and inimitable. For many years they have become the greatest reference in cinema with a social theme and reflection, often with a combative component. In fact, it can be considered quite a large independent genre in its industry, and as such, it can (and should) also be subjected to transformation, hybridization and recycling like any other. And certainly, the result, however Martian it may seem at first, reaches an admirable freshness. It has already been shown in that cult series that is Misfits (E4) that the brits are also the best when it comes to turning the tables on the social story and the dialectics of the marginalized, whose serious and, let’s say, functional side, they have long since consolidated, and turned it into heterodox and genuine gender exercises.

  • Directed: Joe Cornish
  • Starring: John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, Luke Treadaway, Jumayn Hunter, and Nick Frost

Meru (2015)

What drives mountaineers, what drives them? The fascination of the peaks has inspired countless feature films and documentaries. Some tell of triumphs, many of the catastrophes, Meru tells of both.

Life is not always fair. Although Conrad Anker, born in 1962, is one of the most renowned climbers and mountaineers of his generation, only a dead colleague made him known outside of the alpine world. In 1999 he found George Mallory’s body high on the north face of Mount Everest. In the first scene of the documentary Meru, anchor now also hangs in icy heights and fears for his life. The summit is already in sight, but the wind prevents an ascent. So Anker and his companions Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk are waiting in a tent that dangles from a few ropes on a steep wall at over 6000 meters. For an unfamiliar audience, this is an insane and breathtaking construction. Your attempt fails, which is what motivates Anker & Co. even more.

  • Starring: Jimmy Chin, Jeremy Jones, Conrad Anker, Grace Chin
  • Directed By: Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (2018)

Psychological thriller film written and directed by Lynne Ramsay “You Were Never Really Here“.

Best Movies On Amazon Prime

The Scottish filmmaker Lynn Ramsay’s new project You Were Never Really Here now one could be forgiven if this seems a little confusing, because Joaquin Phoenix was in a really crazy experimental thing called. In a movie that is gonna be compared to taken because taken and this have a similar premise where you have some guy who’s got some sort of you know kick-ass eree background whether its military or whatever the hell it is now they find themselves at a different stage in their life but they have to go after people who have been kidnapped and possibly sold into sex slavery rings. Now with Liam Neeson that
was his own daughter and he’s got that connection and with Joaquin Phoenix he doesn’t really seem all that excited about doing this stuff either but this is kind of his job he gets paid under.

  • Directed: Lynne Ramsay
  • Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov, John Doman, Alex Manette, Dante Pereira-Olson, and Alessandro Nivola.

Itzhak (2018)

Itzhak Perlman feels just as comfortable at presidential receptions as in baseball arenas, where he already intones the national anthem when he likes it: to the delight of thousands of (sports) fans. The exceptional violinist, born in Israel in 1945, knows no political or cultural borders at all, which some music journalists have held against him in the past. His already legendary recordings, which have accompanied his long career since his first breakthrough as a boy suffering from polio in the no less legendary Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, are just as varied: (Apparently) he has recorded everything since then. First and foremost Mozart, of course, whose oeuvre is still understood around the world today. Likewise all violin classics by Brahms or Vivaldi, which can be heard in the first music houses in the world as well as on some soft “Sunday mornings” classic CDs. That in turn fits very well with Perlman’s self-deprecating and bound-breaking character, who has the extraordinary honor of playing on Yehudi Menuhin’s noble instrument – a Stradivarius from 1714.

  • Directed By: Alison Chernick
  • Starring: Itzhak Perlman, Toby Perlman, Alan Alda, Billy Joel

Bumblebee (2018)

Bumblebee is a spin-off of the Transformers saga based on the famous yellow Autobot character without his own voice. As always, exquisite visual effects and a perfectly round plot. Maybe too much even. The script is so typical and comprehensive that it seems overly pre-fabricated. Even so, the film is spectacular and entertaining, in addition to providing a more than acceptable background for the character of Bumblebee and serving as a prequel to the first film in the saga.

Trying to escape, in 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small town on the Californian coast. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), about to turn 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, damaged during a battle and decomposed. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is not a normal yellow VolksWagen.

  • Directed: Travis Knight
  • Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, and Pamela Adlon

Leave No Trace (2018)

Tom, a 13-year-old girl, can’t remember knowing any house other than the forest. Returning from the war traumatized, her widowed father indeed dragged her along in an existence where survival rhymes with invisibility, hence the title of Debra Granik’s film. (Best Movies On Amazon Prime)

Discovered by the authorities, here they are brought back to society. For the teenager, there follows a discovery of herself, in contact with others, which the filmmaker films up close, never intrusive, but there to capture every bit of authenticity generated by the young Thomasin McKenzie, remarkable for its accuracy. As he leaves the forest invisibility, Tom has for the first time the choice: to continue to hide or to exist. In this, what this film, both subtle and visceral, gives to see is as moving as a birth.

  • Directed: Debra Granik
  • Starring: Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie, Jeff Kober, and Dale Dickey

The Souvenir (2019)

Drama film was written and directed by Joanna Hogg “The Souvenir“. “Joanna Hogg” won the award of “Sudance Film Festival” in the category of “World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize” on 2nd February 2019.

Best Movies On Amazon Prime

With The Souvenir, Joanna Hogg made a film that started in her own memories. There was no script, but more of a short story, and as the filming went on, the film changed. Therefore it is a representation of their memories, it has gaps, some things will have happened that way, some not. But this is not about facts or authenticity either, but rather in the context of this autofictional narrative, major topics such as the relationship between art and reality, but above all the becoming of a filmmaker, are negotiated. In doing so, he does not become an egocentric navel gazing, but is full of small moments of truth. Thinking about film here always means thinking about life.

  • Directed: Joanna Hogg
  • Starring: Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton.

Rocketman (2019)

Rocketman is not a biopic with vocal interludes. The film is a two-hour puffed up self-adulation. What is missing here is dirt, sex and a little update.

Just imagine those black and white puzzles that were so popular in the 90s and still had a highlight in color in focus. A rose. Or a heart. Now these things are mostly found in souvenir shops. Or just in “Rocketman”.

Best Movies On Amazon Prime

First of all It might be a little unfair to enter the criticism of “Rocketman” with such a grand gesture, but Dexter Fletcher’s biographical musical about Elton John’s life and work is exactly what “Bohemian Rhapsody” wanted to be, but never even close has been. In contrast to “Rocketman”, the Freddie Mercury film was afraid of its own queerness. How annoying it was to see how someone like Freddie Mercury was shown so tailor-made, heteronormative and so without glitz and glitter.

  • Directed: Dexter Fletcher
  • Starring: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard

The Lighthouse (2019)

New England, late 19th century. Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) are two lighthouse keepers who land on a remote island to take care of the maintenance of their lighthouse for four weeks.

Best Movies On Amazon Prime

The Lighthouse is Robert Eggers’ second feature film: an atavistic, dirty and telluric phantasmagoria of Melvillian feverishness, which consolidates its maker as one of the most interesting directors in recent American cinematography. The film, awarded the FIPRESCI Award of the Directors’ Fortnight at the last Cannes Film Festival, is shot in exquisite black and white with a 1: 1 aspect ratio that accentuates the claustrophobic and uncomfortable nature of the story.

  • Directed: Robert Eggers
  • Starring: Willem Dafoe, and Robert Pattinson
