Originally from Kansas City, when she finished high school she moved to New York with the intention of studying musical comedy. Tired of not being able to get good roles, in 2004 Monáe transferred to Atlanta where she formed a band and began to speak in the art community. The definitive accolade came when Big Boi (of OutKast ) included her in one of his compilations and invited her to participate in the album Idlewild. In 2007 Monáe made her solo debut with the ambitious EP The Chase, an original proposal that combined cabaret, soul, rock, and hip-hop. Impressed by her talent, Sean “Diddy” Combs had her signed to his label, and in 2010 he released The Archandroid, the singer-songwriter’s first full-length album. The album was universally hailed as one of the best of the year, even being nominated for a couple of Grammys. After collaborating with Fun on the hit ” We Are Young “, Monáe released The Electric Lady in 2013, an album that featured Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding, Solange, Miguel, and Prince, who some consider her artistic heir.

On 23 June 2021, she signs a music deal with Sony Music Publishing.
